Whether Hydrostatic Test is a must for pipe fittings or not ?

Hydrostatic test is one of the common methods to judge whether pipeline connection is reliable.It appears in the standard of production fuel tanks, pipelines, gas cylinders,boilers and pressure vessel. We usually meet client ask for hydrostatic test to pipe fittings or flanges.Whether hydrotatic test is a must for pipe fittings or not?

To answer this question,we should understand the manufacturing process to pipe fittings.

BW Pipe fittings,like elbow,tee,reducer,are made from steel seamless steel pipe and welded steel pipe. Big size pipe fittings are made from steel plate.Usually,hydrostatic test is a must when steel pipe was produced.means the material steel pipe is no problem to produce pipe fittings.For big size pipe fittings,usually 100% radiography is a must to ensure the soundness of weld seam.some times,hydrostatic test is not a must,it can be replaced by other Non-Destructive Testing.

We did a project from Indonesia,the client request random check Hydrostaic test to the pipe fittings.Weld some fittings together,Fill water from one end and check the water pressure from the water pressure gauge at the other end. When the water pressure reaches a certain value, wait for a few minutes, no leakage is found, and the water pressure is stable.It will be OK.
