ASTM specification for steel materials

What is ASTM steel Grade?

The ASTM standard specifies specific manufacturing processes and precise chemical composition requirements for materials for steel pipes, fittings, and flanges,including percentages of carbon,manganese,nickel,and other chemical elements.Various materials are classified by Grade.

For example: carbon steel pipe material with A,B to distinguish,stainless steel pipe material with TP304 or TP321 to represent,carbon steel pipe fitting with steel grade WPB, and so on.

Here are three examples with different chemical composition requirements:

1. Flange, ASTM A182 Grade F304,F304L,F316L
2. Steel pipe, ASTM A312 Grade TP304,TP304L,TP316L
3. Pipe fitting, ASTM A403 Grade WP304,WP304L,WP316L

In a list of engineering materials, ASTM steel grades are frequently described in the description of steel pipes,pipe fittings,flanges,valves, bolts,and studs,forming a system as a whole.

As you know, ASTM A105 has no steel grade distinction, and people sometimes use ASTM A105N to describe it.N does not mean a steel grade, but means normalizing.Normalizing is a type of heat treatment used only for ferrite materials.The main purpose of normalizing is to eliminate the internal stress during forging, casting or molding.

ASTM is a common steel material,the ASTM standards as follows:

Steel pipe

A106 – specifies seamless carbon steel tubes for high temperatures

A335 – provides ferritic seamless alloy steel tubes for high temperature

A333 – provides for seamless and welded carbon and alloy steel pipes at low temperatures

Pipe fittings

A234 – materials for seamless and welded pipe fittings of rolled carbon and alloy steels are specified

A420 – steel and alloy steel pipe fitting materials for rolling at low temperature are specified

A403 – provides rolled austenitic stainless steel pipe fitting materials

Flanges

A105 – specifies materials for piping components of forged carbon steel

A182 – specifies materials for forging alloy steel and stainless steel piping components

A350 – specified materials for forging low temperature carbon and low alloy steel pipe components

Valve

A216 – specifies carbon steel castings suitable for fusion welding at high temperatures

A217 – specifies martensitic stainless steel and alloy steel castings for high temperature pressure

A352 – steel castings of ferritic and martensitic stainless steels for low temperature pressure are specified

Bolts and nuts

A193 – specifies stainless steel and alloy steel bolt materials for high temperature pressure equipment

A194 – specifies carbon steel and alloy steel nut materials for high temperature and high pressure equipment

A320 – provides low temperature alloy steel and stainless steel bolt materials
